The Pension and Provident Fund Company

Study Fund for the Self-Employed

The study fund for the self-employed is a savings instrument that allows tax-exempt withdrawals of deposited funds after six years from the first deposit, up to a deposit ceiling. The fund also offers tax breaks, professional fund management across a wide range of investment tracks, and the ability to switch between tracks at no cost and without triggering a tax event.

Self-employed individuals can join the study fund through Meitav’s website or app conveniently and easily, or through a licensed pension advisor, such as your insurance agent.

The Benefits of a Study Fund

Study Fund – What You Need to Know

A study fund is a sophisticated investment vehicle that benefits from numerous investment opportunities. The diverse asset portfolio available to pension products includes investments in the capital market, alternative investment channels (non-tradable assets) and similar options. At the same time, it is a tool that allows for the withdrawal of funds as a lump sum, subject to a minimum saving period. Unlike other investment products, savings in a study fund allow for capital gains tax-exempt withdrawal, provided the deposits are made up to the ceiling amount and after six years of saving. This benefit is available to both self-employed individuals and salaried employees (subject to the relevant ceilings for each type of saver).

Is the Timing of the Deposit Important?

Certainly. There is an advantage to depositing funds before the end of the calendar year. Funds deposited after this period will be considered for the following tax year, and you will not benefit from the tax advantage for the current year. The deposit will be considered tax-deductible only after it is recorded by the company managing the fund and included in the annual statement for that year. Therefore, it is advisable to make deposits a few weeks before the end of the calendar year.

Long-Term Deposit

The tax benefits for self-employed individuals in a study fund take effect after a minimum term of six years. However, if you do not need the funds immediately after this period, you can leave them in the fund. Why? Because a study fund benefits from an exemption from capital gains tax, unlike other investment vehicles where the tax on profits can reach up to 25%.
